Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

A technology that combines conventional biological treatment methods with membrane filtration to treat wastewater. MBRs are increasingly used in Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) due to their effectiveness in producing high-quality effluent suitable for reuse or safe discharge into the environment.

Key Advantages of MBR in STP:

The following steps are involved in basic wastewater treatment:

  • Compact Design: MBR systems are more compact than traditional treatment systems, requiring less space due to the integration of biological treatment and membrane filtration in one unit.
  • High-Quality Effluent: MBRs produce effluent with very low concentrations of suspended solids, bacteria, and pathogens, often exceeding conventional treatment methods in terms of water quality.
  • Excellent Separation: The membrane barrier ensures effective separation of solids from the treated water, minimizing the risk of contamination in the final effluent.
  • Flexible Operation: MBRs can be easily adapted to varying flow rates and loads, making them suitable for different applications and wastewater types.
  • Reduced Sludge Production: MBR systems typically produce less excess sludge than conventional methods, which can lead to lower disposal costs and environmental impact.
